Measurement of Boat Noise and Exhaust Emissions

Eurofins Expert Services measures and inspects noise emissions and exhaust emissions as a Notified Body. Noise measurements can be performed in connection with the boat's type certification, or as a separate project.

The Recreational Craft Directive requires emissions measurement

Requirements on the maximum permitted noise and exhaust emissions into the environment caused by boats and personal watercraft have been included into the Recreational Craft Directive. Decibel limits have been set for bypassing boats and personal watercraft, and exhaust emission limits to their engines.

The boat manufacturer must ensure that the noise caused by the boat does not exceed the set limits. The manufacturers of outboard and inboard stern drive motors have ensured that the requirements on the noise and exhaust emissions of their motors are met; these products must have the CE marking. The noise emission measurements of inboard engines, however, must be carried out by a Notified Body.
