Environmental Testing

Eurofins Mineral Testing Finland has knowledge and long experience on analyses of different types of samples and large environmental monitoring projects (e.g. Ekogeochemistry). The sample preparation methods before the actual analysis has to be considered carefully, so the features of elements do not change (oxidation) or the elements do not evaporate during preparation. Freeze-drying (lyophilisation) is suitable especially for sludges, organic rich samples, vegetation or sediments.

We have wide selection of preparation equipment and methods for drying, sieving, cutting, crushing, subsampling, pulverizing and ashing

Our analytical methods cover the main component analyses and heavy metals as well as all trace- and ultratrace metals and REE-elements.

For environmental studies and total amount of bioindicators we use mostly aqua regia leaching (ISO-11466, mod) or nitric acid leaching (US EPA 3051). Analysis is usually performed with ICPOES or ICPMS instruments.

Our services include also a wide variety of weak extractions, which can be used to assess the phases of elements, chemical charasteristics and cation exchance capacity.

Common weak extractions among others are:

  • pH-buffered or neutral salt solutions
  • Ammonium acetate
  • Barium chloride (cation exchange capacity)
  • Acidic oxalate leach (Fe-Mn precipitates)

We use standard solubility tests for leaching behaviour tests

  • One or two step batch leaching test, SFS-EN 12457-1:en/-2:en and SFS-EN 12457-3
  • Column test (Up-flow-percolation test), SFS-EN 14405:2017:en
  • TPLC-test, EPA Test Method 1311

For tailings samples and mining side products we use standard ABA and NAG-tests.

  • Neutralisation potential (NP), SFS-EN 15875
  • Net Acid generation (NAG), ARD Test handbook, Project P387A
