Conformity of doors and windows

Sidebar Image

Eurofins Expert Services is an independent product certification organisation. Currently, the type approval procedures for doors and windows are not always clear, but we help manufacturers demonstrate the conformity of doors and windows.

For some doors and windows, only the characteristics for normal use are specified, and for some, fire classifications as well. Type approval procedures also differ when examining external or internal doors or windows defined as part of the wall structure.

Doors and windows within the scope of CE markings

If a door or window is specified for a fire classification, it will receive CE markings in accordance with two harmonised product standards.

CE markings are currently possible as follows:

  • External pedestrian doorsets (EN 14351-1 & EN 16034)
  • Industrial doors (EN 13241 & EN 16034)
  • Openable windows (EN 14351-1 & EN 16034)
  • Fixed windows, standard use (EN 14351-1)

A manufacturer should contact the notified body in good time so that the test plan and selection of test pieces can be done appropriately; the same applies to CE mark extensions. When operating as a licensed manufacturer, the owner of the test results may also deliver material directly to the notified body.

Certificate of conformity to type approval requirements

The type approval decrees issued under the previous Land Use and Building Act were repealed when the transition period came to a close at the end of 2017, resulting in the repeal of the type approval decrees concerning doors and windows as well.

Since not all door and windows can be CE marked, they fall under the scope of construction site-specific approval. This can be demonstrated with a certificate of conformity to type approval requirements. In such a case, the basis for assessment is the type approval decree, which was repealed at the end of 2017, and quality assurance procedures are the same as with type approvals.

Certificates of conformity to type approval requirements can be issued for the following doors and windows:

  • Internal doors (fire and sound technical characteristics)
  • Power-operated doors
  • Inspection hatches intended as exits for persons
  • Fire curtains
  • Fixed windows used in fire compartmentation
